Billie Downs
Academic, College & Career Coach
Billie Downs is currently the director of the Career Center at Groton Central School District. She began her 17-year tenure in education as a high school business teacher while she coached soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball. After seven years in the classroom, she moved into administration, first as an athletic director, then assistant principal, and then principal. Four years ago she moved into district-level leadership. This past year, she spearheaded the creation of a Career Center with the focus on creating time and space for students to become more self-aware and have meaningful conversations about life after high school including college planning and career awareness, exploration, and preparation. She believes wholeheartedly that, “far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” For her, that work is helping students discover their passions and empowering them to reach their potential and live out their dreams!
Billie attended Cornell University where she earned a BS in Applied Economics and Management and played softball. She later attended SUNY Oswego for an MS in Business & Marketing Education and then GCU for an MS in Educational Leadership. More recently, she completed the Superintendent Development Program and Work-Based Learning Certification through SUNY Oswego and is finishing up a certification in College Admissions Counseling from UCLA. Billie is excited to help the CHC players and their families navigate the next steps in their athletic and academic journeys. She is by no means an expert, but she loves working with students and loves all things college, career, and life readiness and she is happy to help however she can!
